Wait, What Jumping Festival?
Yesterday marked the end of the annual Colacho Baby Jumping Festival in Castrillo de Murcia in Spain.
Since 1620 Castrillo de Murcia has celebrated the Catholic festival Corpus Christi by taking part in an event that is known as El Colacho, or baby jumping. The tradition has been ongoing since the 1620s. In the event, grown men dressed as the Devil jump over babies born in the prior year. The babies lie on mattresses in the street. Not one to be xenophobic and question the rituals of other cultures, but maybe those babies should be wearing full body armor? Getting a bunch of guys drunk on Spanish wine and having them jump over babies doesn’t sound exactly safe.
I would say that it is ill-advised to say the least.
This is also the same country that runs with bulls. Clearly they aren’t playing with a full deck from the time they are born.
My Spanish friend said this only happens in one village and is shunned by most of Spain. Still, that is one village too much.
Well, I guess it’s better than making the babies jump and see which one goes farthest, right?
At least it’s not baby tossing.
