More thoughts on Catholicism and contraception

After some lengthy discussion about the Catholic Church’s dismay over the Health and Human Services Department’s ruling that insurance plans must provide free-of-charge contraceptives, a couple things have become abundantly clear.

The first is that, as is often the case with matters even tangentially sexual, certain Catholics have a special set of rules. The crux of their argument against the “contraception mandate” is that Catholic employers will be required to pay for products that frustrate the procreative force of sex, which they (some of them, anyway) consider a grave moral evil1. This line of reasoning surprised me (although it probably shouldn’t have), because Catholics seem to have very little problem indirectly subsidizing other “grave moral evils” – in many states, for example, Catholics are compelled to pay taxes that cover the costs of carrying out death sentences. Presumably, these tax-paying members of the faithful are not held accountable for the actions of the state, which, in the case of the death penalty especially, violate Catholic teaching.

Tweet of the Day – Ron Paul, Abortion, and Honest Rape™

Christ on a crouton

I’m awarding myself Tweet of the Day because I’m self-congratulatory and because you need to watch Ron Paul answer a question about his views on rape, abortion, and reproductive rights:

“If it’s an honest rape,” Paul replied, “that individual should go immediately to the emergency room, I would give them a shot of estrogen.” He claimed, however, that if a woman is “seven months pregnant” and says that she was raped, “It’s a little bit of a different story.”

Apparently there’s something called Honest Rape™ and that is something different than Dishonest Rape™:

Fox News: The Poors™ Aren’t Poor — They Have Gout!!

PROOF!!!11one

Fox News contributor Charles Payne proves that just when you think Fox News has gone as low as they can go, they find a hidden basement and tumble ass-over-elbow downstairs:

Fox News contributor Charles Payne defended Mitt Romney’s lack of concern for the poor by saying, “To supposedly alleviate the very poor, and Mitt was right. The very poor in America do have a lot of programs a lot of benefits. People aren’t dying in America. You know, in fact, the very poor suffer from gout. In fact, in the 1920s and 30s that was called the rich man’s disease, but here’s the thing, the very poor have entered into this sort of Faustian deal where they’ve said, ’Ok, you know what? If I can go to my mailbox twice a month and get paid the same amount of money that I could get at a low paying job then I’m not going to take it. Continue reading

“NO VOTE FOR YOU: A PRIMER” by @emokidsloveme

[This is a guest post from friend of ABLC, emokidsloveme. -ABLxx]

What’s the big deal with showing your ID when you go to vote? Won’t it keep down voter fraud?

This is the question most people ask when they first learn of the opposition to laws requiring that people who wish to vote present photographic identification at the polls.  The big deal is disenfranchisement.  A person who has the right to vote is precluded from doing so. How does this happen? Let me explain:

Elections are won by garnering the most votes.  This is true for almost every election except that of the Presidency, there is an entire process above the popular vote called the Electoral College which I won’t explain here.  That is for another chat beside another fire.  One way to garner the most votes is by simply getting more people to cast their vote in your favor, the other way to garner the most votes is to preclude citizens who are likely to vote for your opponent from exercising their right to vote at all.  This is why voter identification (Voter ID) laws are a vital tool in elections. Minority voters are less likely to possess the state issued photographic identification. In many cases those who were previously able to exercise their right to vote will no longer be able to vote. In the 2008 election, a whopping 96 percent of African-American voters cast their vote for Barack Obama.

The Wingnuts are Predictably Butt-hurt About Komen’s ‘Cave’

After two days of gloating over Komen’s decision to defund Planned Parenthood, Wingnut Nation now has a great big sad about Komen’s non-reversal reversal:

Mona Charen of the National Review Online lamented that “it’s extremely disappointing that Komen has caved” but “it’s hardly surprising given the onslaught they’ve endured over the course of the last few days,” and NRO’s Daniel Foster charged Planned Parenthood with “gangsterism.”

Indiana, “right to work” laws, and “Power in a Union” – Fridays with Billy

This week, my neighboring state of Indiana became a “Right to Work” state — which sounds oddly like it’s now a better place to work, rather than part of a larger, nation-wide effort to gut unions and strip away the rights that the labor movement has battled for decades to establish (and from which we all benefit, whether or not we are union members – as but one example: Planning to enjoy a two-day weekend this week? Thank a union).

Are unions perfect vessels of workers’ better angels? No. Nothing humanity does is. But I figure unions are an awful lot like democracy: A terrible mess that is immeasurably better than anything else on offer.

Ronulans Will Deny that Ron Paul is Racist Until the End of Days

I feel like I’m down the rabbit hole and I’ll never get out.

About an hour ago, I tweeted Charles Johnson’s excellent post about Ron Paul’s direct ties to white supremacists.  The post is full of facts and links and stuff.

Immediately (of course) several Ronulans popped up in my twitter stream to sing some variation of “That’s a lie! Ron Paul isn’t racist!” in B-flat major.

One person in particular went above and beyond.  Said person was so kind as to tweet a link to a website called “Above the Secrets.”  As soon as I clicked the link, I spewed water onto my computer monitor***:
