Tweet of the Day – Ron Paul, Abortion, and Honest Rape™

Christ on a crouton

I’m awarding myself Tweet of the Day because I’m self-congratulatory and because you need to watch Ron Paul answer a question about his views on rape, abortion, and reproductive rights:

“If it’s an honest rape,” Paul replied, “that individual should go immediately to the emergency room, I would give them a shot of estrogen.” He claimed, however, that if a woman is “seven months pregnant” and says that she was raped, “It’s a little bit of a different story.”

Apparently there’s something called Honest Rape™ and that is something different than Dishonest Rape™:

Fox News: The Poors™ Aren’t Poor — They Have Gout!!

PROOF!!!11one

Fox News contributor Charles Payne proves that just when you think Fox News has gone as low as they can go, they find a hidden basement and tumble ass-over-elbow downstairs:

Fox News contributor Charles Payne defended Mitt Romney’s lack of concern for the poor by saying, “To supposedly alleviate the very poor, and Mitt was right. The very poor in America do have a lot of programs a lot of benefits. People aren’t dying in America. You know, in fact, the very poor suffer from gout. In fact, in the 1920s and 30s that was called the rich man’s disease, but here’s the thing, the very poor have entered into this sort of Faustian deal where they’ve said, ’Ok, you know what? If I can go to my mailbox twice a month and get paid the same amount of money that I could get at a low paying job then I’m not going to take it. Continue reading

Komen-tastrophe: Ari Fleischer’s Paws Were in the Planned Parenthood Pie

Ari Fleischer — who once criticized Planned Parenthood as a “partisan, ideological organization that receives undeserved positive coverage in the press”– secretly helped Komen for the Cure figure out what to do with its pesky Planned Parenthood problem.

From Think Progress:

Ari Fleischer, former press secretary for George W. Bush and prominent right-wing pundit, secretly helped guide Komen Foundation’s disastrous strategy regarding Planned Parenthood. Fleischer personally interviewed candidates for the position of “Senior Vice President for Communications and External Relations” at Komen last December. According to a source with first-hand knowledge, Fleischer drilled prospective candidates during their interviews on how they would handle the controversy about Komen’s relationship with Planned Parenthood.

Fleischer’s relationship with Komen and the Planned Parenthood controversy was previously undisclosed.

Arizona Lawmaker Proposes ‘White American Day’

Arizona Republican Cecil Ash suggested that the state consider celebrating “White American Day.” I guess he’s tired of black folks acting all uppity ‘n shit for 28 (29 this year!) days straight:

Arizona Republican Cecil Ash could be the new standard bearer for his state’s racist reputation. During a discussion in the state house about perhaps enacting a Latino American day or month like Black History Month, Ash suggested that the state should also consider a “White American Day” of some sort.

Indiana, “right to work” laws, and “Power in a Union” – Fridays with Billy

This week, my neighboring state of Indiana became a “Right to Work” state — which sounds oddly like it’s now a better place to work, rather than part of a larger, nation-wide effort to gut unions and strip away the rights that the labor movement has battled for decades to establish (and from which we all benefit, whether or not we are union members – as but one example: Planning to enjoy a two-day weekend this week? Thank a union).

Are unions perfect vessels of workers’ better angels? No. Nothing humanity does is. But I figure unions are an awful lot like democracy: A terrible mess that is immeasurably better than anything else on offer.

Komen for the Cure’s Komentastrophe

When I first wrote about KomenGate, I surmised that Komen’s “new criteria” (no grants to organizations under investigation) which resulted in the defunding of Planned Parenthood were adopted specifically to give Komen an excuse to bail on Planned Parenthood.  (Planned Parenthood is under investigation by Florida Representative Cliff Stearns.)

As I wrote in September, it’s a bullshit investigation designed to undermine Planned Parenthood and subvert its purpose out of fealty to the religious right.  And, it seems clear to me that Komen for the Cure adopted its “new criteria” specifically so it could hang its hat on Stearns’ bullshit investigation and then throw up its hands: “Whelp! What’re ya gonna do?”

It turns out I was right.  From Jeffrey Goldberg at The Atlantic:

Komen for the Cure Puts Political Ideology Before Saving Women’s Lives

I support Planned Parenthood!

Dear Komen for the Cure:

You stupid, cowardly, shit-eating, fucking asswipes need to go fuck yourselves with several rusty pitchforks™.  It’s fucking pathetic of you to go after Planned Parenthood in this blatantly partisan manner. Take your fucking pink ribbon and stick it where the sun don’t shine!

Fuck you, assholes.

Sincerely,
asiangrrlMN

Pure rage.  That was my immediate response to reading on the Twitter Machine that the Komen for the Cure charity had decided to stop funding Planned Parenthood.   My esteemed overlady, ABL, has an excellent piece on the situation and the strong anti-choice views held by Karen Handel, the new VP of Public Policy of Komen (hint:  she pals around with Sarah Palin.)

I will have more to say on that in a minute, but I need to give you some background first.

I’ve had abortion on the mind a lot lately  Why?  ’Coz I’m a liberal and that’s all we ever think about, at least according to some rightwing nutters.  Actually, it’s because the RWNJ are passing laws right and right encroaching upon women’s right to choose.  I have written about it several times in the past, and I have a hunch I will write about it several more times in the future.  The piece I was contemplating writing was going to be about how I view abortion in general because I am pretty extreme on the issue, even for a liberal.

That piece will be shelved for another day, however, as I am seething with rage over this Komen/Planned Parenthood bullshit.  There is so much bullshit involved, I need my rusty pitchfork™ so I can stab some motherfuckers in the cavities where their hearts would be – if they had hearts.

Dear GOP: Just shut up about black people already. Good lord.

You know…Participation in the Angry Black Lady Chronicles aside, I don’t know the first thing about being black.

I’m whiter than Angel Food Cake and, except for when I lived in a foreign land, have never even lived much around people who are a whole lot darker than Angel Food Cake. My current abode is in a town known for its diversity, and it’s pretty diverse, but white people are still pretty thick on the ground. And even if I were the only white person in all of Prince Georges County, I would still not know about being black.

Because I would still be white, you see.

But here’s what I do know:

Komen for the Cure Cuts Planned Parenthood Funding for Breast Cancer Screening and Health Services

Komen for the Cure is abandoning women in need.

PhotobucketThere’s a new and ugly development in the GOP’s War on Women.  The Forced Birthers have enlisted an organization — Komen for the Cure, which scores of women have relied upon both to prevent breast cancer, and as a support network when fighting breast cancer — to help undermine the rights of women to make decisions about their bodies for themselves.

In a press release today, Planned Parenthood announced that The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation will no longer provide Planned Parenthood the more than half million dollars in grant funds which Planned Parenthood uses to provide breast health education, screenings, and referrals for mammograms.

Turns out that Komen’s new Vice-President of Public Policy, Karen Handel, is a Forced Birther, and even ran for governor of Georgia on a platform of defunding Planned Parenthood.  Thus, it seems that Komen for the Cure, the purpose of which is to help women, has been taken hostage by Karen Handel and her right-wing Forced Birth views which undermine women and women’s reproductive choices.  In her own words, “Since I am pro-life [anti-choice] I do not support the mission of Planned Parenthood.”
